The Charter Seed Company of Twin Falls, Idaho, brought this heat loving bean to the market in 1962. Vigorous plants grow up to 18" tall and keep bearing during the heat of summer. They produce 6" pods in abundance that stay tender for a long time. The pods are dark green with white seeds and have a delicious flavor, whether cooked fresh, canned, or frozen. They mature in 55 days.

The vegetable we now recognize as the common bean has its roots in South America as far back as the Pre-Incan civilization in Peru. When Columbus arrived in the New World, he found green beans growing with the maize of the Indians. Columbus and other European explorers introduced this new vegetable to their countries, where it eventually spread to the rest of Europe and all over the world.

Sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and soil and air temperatures have warmed. Harvest frequently to increase yields. Keep the soil cool with regular watering and good mulching. Choose well-drained soil with a pH above 6.0. After the last frost date, sow seeds directly into the garden soil about 2" apart, 1" deep, in rows 20–36" apart. The optimum soil temperature for germination is 70–90°F plant when daytime soil temperatures average at least 60°F, or risk poor germination. Inoculants can increase yields. Make successive sowings every 2–3 weeks through midsummer for a continuous supply. Do not thin. Dark-colored seeds germinate better in cool soil than white seeds.

Each of our heirloom garden seeds is carefully hand-packaged in an airtight bag (proven to preserve freshness better than paper packets). Every packet is labeled with this season's information, along with growing tips and germination tests.
