Tennis Ball was among Thomas Jefferson's favorite lettuce varieties. He noted that "it does not require so much care and attention" as other types. Rather loose heads are petite, 4-6 inches in diameter, Bibb or Butterhead type. Historically it used to be pickled in brine and served as a side dish. The taste and texture of this lettuce were out of this world! The Tennis Ball is distinctive for its delicate, pale-green leaves, which form a loosehead. Compact heads work well planted close together in tighter spaces. Black-seeded. Butterhead, 50 days.
