Salad King Endive Heirloom Garden Seed Non-GMO

Packet Size

Salad King endive is bolt and frost resistant. Heads are 22-24” wide and 12” tall with tightly curled dark green leaves with white ribs. The plant produces good yields of dark green endive leaves with white ribs. Great greens for salads. One of the best endive varieties on the market. Slow to bolt, frost tolerant, and produces well even under difficult conditions. An excellent choice for home gardens. Leaves are most popularly used in salads but are also excellent cooked and used in dishes. Open Pollinated. 90 days.

Plant seeds ¼” deep in full sunlight with rows 12” apart and plants 18” apart. Leaves are less bitter when blanched. Harvest when they reach their full height, leaving 1” of the plant so that it can grow back. For direct seeding, seeds will germinate from 45–85°F with the highest germination at 75°F, depending on the variety and seed lot. Sow seeds 1″ apart rows 12–18″ apart. Cover seed lightly, about 1/8″, and tap soil down gently. Thin to 8″ apart. Keep soil uniformly moist during germination and early growing. For transplanting, sow 2-3 seeds in cells, barely covering seeds with fine vermiculite, 3-4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Harvesting: Pull the plant, roots included, from the soil gently and chop off the root, but keep the leaves. If you plan on forcing chicory to grow chicos, cut the leaves so 1 inch remains above the soil and follow the forcing process.
