(Tagetes lucida), aka Mexican Tarragon, Pericon, Sweet Mace, Marigold, is an annual plant grown in zones 4-7 and a perennial in zones 8-11. It features glossy leaves and golden flowers, with a unique tea offering a complex, mint/licorice flavor. A popular pollinator and tea plant, it is also a condiment and pest repellent. Mexicans Marigold is a great container plant for porches, decks, and patios, producing lovely sweet-scented cut flowers. Plant Mexican marigolds along borders in areas of full sun or partial shade to add a vibrant layer of color to transition areas. Such locations include walkways, patios, and outdoor living areas. When brushed across, the flowers and leaves release a pleasing fragrance. The Lucida species of Mexican marigold is beneficial to gardeners because it attracts helpful wildlife and repels pests such as aphids, whiteflies, cabbage maggots, and bean weevils. Ladybugs and other pollinators are often found on the leaves. This plant is also a great addition to butterfly gardens, providing nectar for several species of butterflies and bumblebees.

Growing Tips
Mexican marigolds prefer warm soil, so plant after any threat of frost has passed, and the soil no longer feels cool when first handled. Seeds should be directly sown into the soil, and firmly pressed into place for optimal growth. Keep the soil moist during germination, then reduce watering until the top inch of the earth is slightly dry. Robust and low-maintenance, these flowers require full to partial sun and should be harvested every few days to promote continual blooming. As the first flowers wither and produce seeds, the plant will slow its growth. Other vegetables that pair well with Mexican Marigolds include basil, beans, citrus, eggplant, peas, sage, mint, and tomatoes.
