This rare, 5'–6' tall, ornamental heirloom corn was brought to America from Japan in the mid-1800s. It has beautiful variegated leaves of pink, creamy white, yellow stripes, with purple-green flower spikes and dark purple tassels. The cobs have dark burgundy kernels that can be dried and ground into a richly colored cornmeal. It is hard to find prettier garden corn!
Direct sow outdoors after the threat of frost has passed, until mid-summer. Sow corn seeds directly 3-4 inches apart, in rows spaced 36 inches apart in blocks of at least 4 rows to insure proper pollination for kernel formation. Thin plants to indicated spacing if necessary. Corn requires fertile soil and little attention. Water during dry periods.
