Catnip Seeds Heirloom Medicinal Herb
Catnip, Nepeta cataria is a perennial herb found growing wild throughout North America, Europe, and parts of China. An attractive hardy perennial herb, a vigorous member of the mint family. This spreading plant grows to 24” with lavender-blue flowers all summer and a minty fragrance. Irresistible to bees, butterflies, beneficial insects and a favorite for cats. Catnip grows readily in poor, dry, sandy, or hot soils where little else is successful. It grows readily and returns reliably for years of pleasure. This is easy to grow from seed, but it has a bit of slow germination. To reduce self-sowing, cut it back after bloom. Nepeta cataria is a true catnip, the plant most cats go crazy for. The term 'catnip' is thought to originate from the response cats show towards the plant. It has an aromatic, mint-like flavor. Its young shoots can be eaten raw in summer salads, added to stews or rubbed into the meat.
